June 19th, 1865 marks the day the Union soldiers traveled to Galveston, Texas with the news that the American Civil War had ended and all enslaved African Americans were now free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln two years prior, that document only freed the slaves in the Union states. So after the Civil War ended in 1865, these freedoms were granted to all slaves across the nation. Now, Juneteenth is commemorated nationwide with celebrations that feature music, soul food, prayer services, and more. It is a day to celebrate the freedom and achievement of the African American community.
In solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, we’ve compiled a list of the vegan, black-owned businesses around the nation that have special Juneteenth menus for you to enjoy and celebrate with today!
