In a nutshell, Veganuary is a UK non-profit organization that asks people to take a one month pledge––each January–– to refrain from eating any meat or animal-based products.
If you haven’t participated in Veganuary before, now is a better time than ever. According to research results found by James Poore of the University of Oxford, the nonprofit organization Veganuary expects to have at least 350,000 people participating this year.
This, of course, will result in some very impressive results by the end of the month. Poore explains his findings, “We calculated the environmental impacts of the current diet and the vegan diet for every country globally using the latest environmental impact data—this includes everything from agriculture to food transport.” The findings were eye-opening. He continues, “For the 350,000 people expected to take part in Veganuary, this would save as much greenhouse gas emissions as moving 160,000 cars from the road or about 400,000 to 500,000 single flights from London to Berlin.”
Veganuary is a rather new nonprofit organization and a new concept, launching originally in the UK in 2014. Last year, it saw nearly 250,000 pledges participate. Although its roots are in the United Kingdom, the Veganuary challenge has spread in popularity, reaching the United States and many other countries. In these places, many celebrities and businesses are even promoting and celebrating Veganuary.
Imagine how many animals’ lives will be saved a few years from now.
