Last month, on March 31, 2019, the rapper/entrepreneur/community activist Nipsey Hussle was killed, shot in broad daylight in front of his clothing store, The Marathon Clothing, in Los Angeles while fighting against a robber who allegedly attempted to steal his 2006 blue Lamborgini.
The entertainer and community activist had recently released his critically acclaimed album Victory Lap, which was dubbed a “potent symbol of black entrepreneurship” in his Los Angeles community by The New York Times. The album was even nominated for Best Rap Album Grammy at the beginning of this year.
Aside from music, the former gang member worked hard to rebuild the local neighborhoods in his community and encouraged youth to opt out of gang involvement. He was also very active in the vegan movement, which was evident in his strong interest in holistic doctor, Dr. Sebi, as well as in his documentary (not yet released) profiling the doctor’s work.
At the recent memorial service held for Nipsey Hussle (real name: Ermias Joseph Asghedom), his mother Angelique Smith presented a piece about her dear son and also spoke of the benefits of following his path in adopting a vegan lifestyle.
In addition to recommending that people limit their use of alcohol and narcotics, she said, “I want to encourage you to choose a vegan lifestyle.” North of 20,000 people attended the memorial service, which was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on April 11, 2019.
Attendees included Jhene Aiko, vegan singer and good friend of Nipsey, who paid her respects with a musical tribute, as well as the famed vegan singer Stevie Wonder, who performed his song “Rocket Love” and discussed the need for stronger gun control laws.
Just some of the well-known celebrities who have recently adopted a vegan lifestyle include Timbaland, DJ Khaled, the Carters (Jay Z and Beyoncé), Lenny Kravitz, and even former boxer Mike Tyson.
