More Healthy, Plant-Based in 2021: While 2020 was the year of comfort food, many Americans are looking at 2021 as a clean slate with 72% of Americans planning to eat healthier in 2021 with nearly half (47%) sharing that they’ll incorporate more plant-based foods into their diets.
- 18-24 year olds ranked plant-based as the most appetizing vegan dish in DoorDash’s mid-year trend report and vegetarian food trends are still growing in popularity at a steady rate, with Black Bean Tacos seeing a 456% increase, Plant-Based Burgers seeing a 225% increase, and Mushroom Burgers seeing a 195% increase in order frequency this year compared to 2019 data.

In October 2020, DoorDash saw a 2,417% increase in the frequency of searches for Black-owned businesses in the US compared to May 2020. The US state that ordered from the most Black-owned restaurants this year was California, followed by Texas and Maryland.

Strong majorities plan to order more from Black-owned, Women-owned, and locally-owned restaurants in 2021:
- 50% made an effort to order more from Black-owned establishments. 16% made a serious effort.
- 58% plan to make an effort to order more from Black-owned restaurants in 2021. 25% plan to make a significant effort.
- Young consumers (18-34) are even more supportive of Black-owned restaurants. 57% of 18-34 year-olds say they made an effort to order more from Black-owned restaurants in 2020, and 67% plan to in 2021. 58% of frequent orderers say they made an effort to order more from Black-owned restaurants in 2020, and 63% plan to in 2021.
- 60% plan to make an effort to order more from Women-owned restaurants in 2021. 25% plan to make a significant effort.
- 80% made an effort to order more from local small businesses. 38% made a serious effort.
- 84% plan to make an effort to order more from local small businesses in 2021. 43% plan to make a significant effort.
Healthy eating, and trying more food from local small businesses are leading 2021 plans:
- 72% plan to eat healthier in 2021, with a variety or strategies, led by trying more food from local small businesses, selected by 49%, and incorporating more plant-based foods into diets (47%).
- The 39% who will try to experience new foods are most likely to report they want to try Indian (9%), organic or vegan foods (8%), Thai (6%), or Japanese food (6%)
