As someone who knows the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, Adams supports the global non-profit organization’s Meating Halfway 21-day journey
Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams has announced his support of World Animal Protection, a global animal welfare non-profit organization’s Meating Halfway 21-day journey.
Meating Halfway is World Animal Protection’s 21-day journey guiding participants towards eating less meat. By choosing to eat less meat a few days a week or one plant-based meal per day, you can join a people-powered movement that’s transforming our food system to be more sustainable and kinder to animals, not to mention greatly improving your overall health.
“When many people make small individual changes, it has the potential to transform our world. That’s why I am endorsing World Animal Protection’s Meating Halfway, a 21-day journey guiding folks toward eating less animal products,” said Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams. “By choosing to eat more plant-based foods, we can create a more sustainable and equitable food system that’s better for our planet, our city, ourselves, and animals. I personally know the many benefits of eating less meat, dairy, and eggs. It is why I’ve spearheaded a plant-based medicine program within the city’s largest medical system, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and worked to implement Meatless Mondays at 15 schools in Brooklyn – that has since been expanded to all 1,700 NYC public schools.”
“We’ve seen firsthand how those struggling with preexisting conditions like diabetes and hypertension are more prone to the serious implications of COVID-19. Fortunately, these diseases can be managed or even prevented with a nutritious diet,” Adams states. “Ensuring that every New Yorker has access to healthy and nutritious plant-based foods is a priority for me, it’s why I support Meating Halfway as a tool to help New Yorkers incorporate more plant-based foods into their diets.”
“World Animal Protection is honored to have Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President’s support for its meat reduction campaign and Meating Halfway journey,” said Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Campaign Manager, World Animal Protection, US. “The United States has one of the highest rates of meat consumption of any country. New York City is the most populous city in the nation, so it’s crucial that New Yorkers reduce their consumption of factory-farmed meats, dairy, and eggs. Factory farming evolved as a means to satisfy an ever-increasing demand for animal products. However, meat reduction can end some of the cruelest factory farming practices, such as extreme confinement, the overuse of antibiotics, and brutal mutilations,” continued Loria.
“By reducing the demand for conventionally produced meat, dairy, and eggs, World Animal Protection expects that factory farming will be phased out. As overall meat demand declines, a shift towards family farming and practices that are more sustainable and kinder to animals will replace low welfare practices. Our vision is a world where respect for animals and nature sits at the heart of our food system, equitable, sustainable, resilient, and capable of feeding the world,” said Loria.
The custom journey includes support from meat reduction experts, a free meat reduction starter kit, delicious recipes to make at home, fun, customized get-to-know-you exercises, and exclusive discounts from World Animal Protection corporate partners.
