GOING PLANT-BASED CAN LEAVE PEOPLE FEELING ISOLATED. STUDIES HAVE FOUND HAVING A FOOD RESTRICTION INCREASES THE CHANCE OF LONELINESS BY 19%. WITH LONELINESS LINKED TO DEPRESSION AND AN INCREASED LIKELIHOOD OF MORTALITY BY 26%, LONELINESS IS A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE THAT THE PLANT-BASED COMMUNITY FACES. GRAZER, THE PLANT-BASED CONNECTION APP, HAS SET OUT TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE FOR THE COMMUNITY THEY LOVE.
The millennial and Gen-Z plant-based connection app, Grazer is building a social hub to unite and empower the plant-based community. Co-Founder, Charlotte Elizabeth explains: “Our vision is to provide a space where the plant-based community can connect freely. We like to think of Grazer as ‘your vegan friend’ introducing you to your local plant-pioneers’
CEO and founder Lewis Foster says “when I first went vegan in 2010, my family didn’t support what I was doing. It became a big talking point for everyone. I felt as though I had to constantly explain and validate my decisions, which quickly left me feeling isolated. Socialising became more difficult and it put a strain on my mental health. I hope Grazer can provide a support network for people experiencing the same.’
A study by Science Daily found: Despite being physically present with others, having a food restriction leaves people feeling left out because they are not able to take part in bonding over the meal. Compared with non-restricted individuals, having a restriction like this has increased reported loneliness by 19%.
Loneliness can have a huge impact on physical and mental health. The Good Men Project found that feeling lonely is associated with a greater risk of depression and can have a significant impact on our physical health. Research by WebMD found loneliness has the same impact on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and the Campaign to End Loneliness found loneliness actually increases the likelihood of mortality by 26%
Lockdown and the pandemic meant more people than usual were feeling lonely. One recent study carried out by Queen’s University Belfast in Spain during the COVID-19 pandemic found that loneliness was associated with higher emotional distress. As restrictions start to lift, Grazer thinks people are ready to get back to meeting like-minded people in their community.
Co-Founder of Grazer, Charlotte Elizabeth: ‘Veganism is more than a diet, it’s an ethical and moral framework that defines someone’s daily choices. We’ve seen vegans really value finding other like-minded friends.’
Evidence that vegans want to meet other vegans can be seen directly in Grazer’s usership. An estimated 3% of Bumble use its BFF (friend-finding) feature, whereas 20% of Grazer users are on the lookout for a plant-based bestie.
Charlotte Elizabeth goes on to say: “We’re pleased with just how many of our users are active on our friend-finding section. It shows there is a real need amongst the plant-based community for connection and support.”
Vegan filmmaker and Grazer investor Kip Andersen, of Cowspiracy, Seaspiracy and What the Health, speaks excitedly of Grazer’s future: ‘It’s a way to connect us all together and to meet new awesome people who share common ideals, goals and visions. I think the growth potential of this is phenomenal because as this movement grows, so will Grazer. I am excited to be a part of it.’
Grazer can be downloaded today on both Apple and Android phones globally. More information can be found on their website here: https://www.grazerapp.com/
Grazer was launched by Lewis Foster from personal experiences of trying to date while vegan, receiving seed funding from vegan film director, Kip Andersen, of What The Health, Cowspiracy and Seaspiracy. Due to an upsurge in veganism and people using the friend-finding feature Grazer are looking to receive further press exposure.
