Pennsylvania-based producer of ethically-made kitchen textiles now shipping nationwide
Philadelphia, PA – Kitchen Garden Textiles, a line of sustainable textiles with a mission to support urban agriculture and reduce reliance on single-use disposables, is now available nationwide through its newly launched website: www.kitchengardentextiles.com/. Founded by former costume designer Heidi Barr, the line includes napkins, aprons, market bags, paperless towels, coffee filters, tea bags and much more, all crafted in Pennsylvania from unbleached, undyed linen and reclaimed materials.
“Our goal is to provide beautiful and practical kitchen textiles that help people live without synthetic fabrics, plastics or single use disposables in their home or restaurant kitchens,” said Barr. “Using, wearing and washing natural fabrics like linen in our day to day lives can mitigate a slew of environmental problems, from polyester microplastics in the oceans to unrecyclable plastics in landfills. I’m optimistic that the more people have access to quality natural textiles, the easier it will be for them to make the switch.”
After years of creating disposable costumes for film and television productions, costume designer Heidi Barr found herself “a part of the problem.” She wanted to stop creating (costumes or anything at all) with synthetic fabrics and start working exclusively with natural fibers. She chose linen as her new medium because it’s compostable and flax is a low pesticide, low water-use crop and started producing home textiles to reduce reliance on single-use and plastic disposables. The organic linen textiles she now produces are 100% free from synthetic fabrics (and, thereby, the microplastics polluting the world’s oceans). Heidi has one problem with linen in that most of it is currently imported from overseas, so she’s now actively working to restore flax agriculture and organic linen production in the U.S. with her Flax Project.
“We are working to grow flax on regenerative farms and establish a mill so we can produce all our linen from scratch locally,” added Barr. She is collaborating with Pennsylvania-based farmers to cultivate flax for her linen supply chain, working to re-establish the flax for linen industry in Pennsylvania.
