It’s National Guacamole Day and we’re busting some common guac myths with our friends from Avocados from Mexico.
Myth 1: Avocado Pits Keep Guacamole Green
While this sounds like a cool trick, the best way to keep your guacamole fresh is to store properly until use by tightly sealing the surface of your dish and keeping it in the fridge until you’re ready to get your guac on. Over time, guacamole exposed to air will oxidize and turn brown, as will any cut avocado. A squeeze of lime will help if you need to keep your guacamole for a little while, but for a longer wait, pour a small amount of water or plant milk on top of your guac — just enough to cover the surface — and keep it in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to eat it, pour off the liquid, and serve!
Myth 2: All Ingredients Should Be Mashed Together When Making Guac
The trick to the tastiest guac is to mash your avocados to their desired consistency first – then add the rest and lightly stir. This way, you have juicy veggies in every bite.
Myth 3: There’s Only One Way to Make Guac
You may have a tried and true guacamole recipe, but that doesn’t mean you can’t shake it up and get inventive with your guac. Try mixing in some fun additions, like vegan bacon, vegan feta cheese, or even serve your guacamole in a halved pineapple. Fancy!
