Video Reveals Factory Farms with Open Pits of Decomposing Animals, Making Local Communities Vulnerable to Water and Air Pollution
Today, Mercy For Animals released a new drone investigation showing the hazards of pig disposal at massive factory farms in Nebraska. With COVID-19 outbreaks at slaughterhouses rising, even after temporary shutdowns, numerous factory farms have decided to “depopulate”—kill and dispose of millions of animals at farms instead of sending them to slaughter.
The investigation revealed egregious health hazards:
- Decomposing pig corpses dumped into open pits
- Plastic garbage bags filled with body parts
- Dead piglets in an open-air container alongside a public road
- Pig corpses piled into an open trailer and transported down a highway

“This drone footage reveals the disposal of pigs after they have endured the cruelty of life and death in factory farms,” said Leah Garcés, president of Mercy For Animals. This not only exposes blatant disregard for these animals as sentient individuals but places people and our environment at risk. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the frailty of our current food system and the imperative to invest in alternatives to animal agriculture.”
