Plant-based products have taken over the meat and dairy industry, however, a new trend has emerged, plant-based eggs. Recently, the trend has taken on a new form with Wunder-Egg’s new hard-boiled “egg” product, disrupting the already familiar liquid “egg” variety consumers know and love.
Label Insight, a NielsenIQ company, (which helps retailers, CPG brands and organizations like the FDA, USDA and American Heart Association drive growth through quality product data) can pull data for you specific to the growing plant-based egg trend.
They recently took a look at how consumers are shopping other plant-based alternatives and are happy to pull any others should you have an interest:
Plant-based Milk

- Milk alternative sales rose by 13.5% showing significant growth compared to cow milk sales which decreased by 1.2%
- Consumers spent $10.88 billion on cow’s milk vs. $2.19 billion on milk alternatives
- There was a 3.8% increase in alternative milk buying households, vs. a -2.3% decrease in cow’s milk buying households
- Oat milk sales increased by 117.9% indicating that consumers are interested in buying new, alternative forms of milk beyond cow and nut-based milks
- American households spent an average of 6.1% more on milk alternatives in 2020 showing consumers have made the switch to non-dairy lifestyles
- American households spent an average of 3.4% more on cow’s milk in 2020 showing that some consumers still prefer cow milk compared to plant-based alternatives
- Some alternative milks did see a decline in sales this past year, specifically, rice milk (-14.3%), soy milk (-4.3%) and coconut milk (-2.3%)
Plant-based Meat

- 44,000 consumers searched for “vegan” products on Amazon, specifically, “vegan meat’, “vegan chicken”, “vegan burgers” and “vegan fish” showing consumers want more than just alternative beef as an option
- Over 1,000 consumers were interested in knowing which alternative burger patties contain soy, confirming allergens are a top concern for shoppers and retailers should be sensitive to this
- Consumers are still interested in “bean” and “black bean” burgers as a substitute for meat, in fact, Amazon searches for the product rose by 45%
