Food makes the world go ’round, but it doesn’t always just show up on your plate when you want it to. People grow it and make it for you—but you can do that yourself, too! Here are some fun foods that you can make and grow by yourself at home to delight your taste buds.
Sourdough Bread
Baking breads of all kinds is fun to do in your home, but sourdough bread is one of the most exciting to bake. The process is a little complicated, as you need a fermented yeast culture—known as the sourdough starter—to give your bread the tanginess and chewy texture for which it’s known. One of the most exciting things about making sourdough is that you can continue making it forever once you’ve created a starter. You need to “feed” the starter periodically, but you can use it for your sourdough bread for years.
Mushrooms
Some of the tastiest foods you may not have thought you could grow are mushrooms. There’s a wide variety you can grow in your home, and all have fantastic health benefits. You can incorporate mushrooms into many different meals.
You’ll need to buy a grow kit, but once you’ve started growing, it’ll be hard to stop. You’ll also need to consider which jars are best for growing, but it will surely be fun nonetheless!
Kombucha
Kombucha has been around for a while, but it has been hitting the mainstream only in the last decade. It’s a delicious drink made from fermented tea. It’s good for your health, and you can make it yourself at home! You can purchase a DIY kit online, or you can grow your own SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) to ferment the tea for you. Executing the process correctly can be challenging, but you’ll be happy you tried it—the process is incredibly fun, and your reward is some delicious, fizzy kombucha.
These are only a few of the fun foods that you can make and grow by yourself at home; there are many more to experiment with. All that matters is that you have fun doing it, and you’ll hopefully have something you want to eat at the end of the process.
