Following suit from renowned U.S. award shows- from the SAG Awards to the Oscars, the Met Gala will be serving their fashionable guests a sustainable, planet-friendly, plant-based meal!
The theme for this year is “American fashion,” and will feature a two-part exhibit. First is the “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” for which the dress code is “American Independence,” which opens at the Met on September 18, 2021. The second exhibit is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which opens on May 5, 2022. The night of alluring vogue will be hosted by vegan musician Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka.
Vogue’s feature about the upcoming “Super Bowl of Fashion” lists 10 rising culinary stars — Fariyal Abdullahi, Nasim Alikhani, Emma Bengtsson, Lazarus Lynch, Junghyun Park, Erik Ramirez, Thomas Raquel, Sophia Roe, Simone Tong, and Fabian von Hauske — who will each contribute to the delightful plant-based feast.
In an interview with Bon Appétit, renowned chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson- who also selected the chefs, said “They represent what the food scene in New York today looks like … what the next generation of food looks like, tastes like, where it lives.”
“We want to be the future of American food, of plant-based food. That conversation is happening now,” he emphatically adds. Samuelsson believes that the food and fashion industries parallel one another with their respect for craftsmanship.
“Being a chef is all about working a lot with style, with people. It’s the same thing with fashion. It’s a different medium, but you’re really expressing a point of view, a sense of place.”
–Marcus Samuelsson
He also addresses how both industries are exploring their relationship and impact on our planet. On that note, keeping animals off the plates was a no-brainer.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk is all on board with this effort! “Kindness to animals is as American as apple pie, so the new vegan menu is perfect for the gala’s ‘Americana’ theme, and it’s sure to set a trend for other fashion events to follow,” she says. Newkirk also calls for attendees to “embrace Earth- and animal-friendly fashion, too — meaning no fur, leather, cashmere, wool, or feathers.” We are hopeful that the awareness that led to a plant-based menu will inspire designers and attendees to shun animal materials and embrace the revolution of plant-based, cruelty-free textiles- all fashion weeks will be a Vegan Fashion Week!
