Los Angeles, CA – June 19, 2024 – In a historic display of community service and culinary excellence, Celebrity Chef Supreme, founder of The Harvest Academy, set a Guinness World Record by serving 1,000+ meals, which were vegan, to community members in just one hour (1008 served in 37 minutes to be exact). This event, in partnership with Councilman Kevin de León, took place on Wednesday, June 19th, Juneteenth, at Estrada Courts in Boyle Heights, an area celebrated for its historical significance as the birthplace of the 1970s Chicano Mural Art Movement. Dozens of volunteers were present to lend a hand, from boxing up the meals to serving them door-to-door to the community.
Chef Supreme Dow’s overall goal with The Harvest Academy is to serve 100,000 nutritious meals to our unhoused neighbors in Los Angeles over the next decade. He believes, “Everyone deserves the opportunity to be whole, healthy, and happy.” The vegan meals, courtesy of The Boys and Girls Club and Generation Vegan (Gen V), with the support of the City of Los Angeles, Council District 14, and influential organizations like Gen V, The Plant-Based Treaty, The Save Movement, The SheRise Enterprise, and UnchainedTV, this event became a landmark in community engagement and social responsibility. The vegan meal consisted of savory Beyond Meat meatloaf, Spanish Rice, kale salad, and a soft chocolate chip cookie.
This initiative addresses a critical public health issue: more than 3 in 10 teens in LA are overweight or obese, with Latino children and teens having the highest overweight and obesity rates of any ethnic group. Almost half of 10 to 17-year-old Latinos in L.A. Counties are overweight or obese, according to the California Health Interview Survey.
“This event represents more than just a culinary challenge; it embodies our commitment to fostering unity and health within our community through sustainable food practices. By serving these meals, we are not only feeding bodies but also nourishing souls and strengthening the communal bonds that define our city,” said Chef Supreme Dow. This historic event not only set a new world record, it also inspired a wave of community involvement and sustainable practices across the city. Community members were encouraged to support this cause by volunteering and making donations at https://theharvestacademyclub.org.
