Just this week, the grocery chain Kroger Company introduced its newest food item: a plant-based burger patty that is meaty and beef-like in appeal. Being the largest supermarket chain in the U.S., Kroger’s introduction of the new vegan patty is a great step in the right direction for us.
The new burger patty––simply called the Plant-Based Patty––is an addition to the supermarket chain’s brand new Simple Truth Emerge line, which is an addition to the already-existing Simple Truth Plant Based line that was recently released in September.
The Emerge Plant-Based Patties are made using pea protein instead of animal meat and byproducts. Furthermore, the product is being stocked in Kroger’s meat case, right along with meats.
In a recent statement, Vice President of Kroger’s Our Brands umbrella brand, said, “Kroger believes that everyone deserves to have access to fresh, affordable, and delicious food, no matter who you are, how you shop, or what you like to eat, and Simple Truth Emerge is an illustration of the commitment that Kroger has to provide our 11 million daily customers with new choices that fit their evolving eating styles and preferences.”
In December of 2019, the company installed vegan-meat-only display cases in its meat departments at 60 test stores in Denver, Indiana, and Illinois. The resulting numbers from the study showed promise and a demand for more plant-based products. By the end of this year, Kroger has hopes to implement 50 additional new vegan items to the Simple Truth brand.
