Plant-based diets and vegan lifestyles have been rising in popularity over the past five years around the world – and exponentially among the Mexican culture In a recent survey, 20% of Mexicans identified themselves as vegetarians or vegans with data showing that veganism is growing at an accelerated rate in the country. After all, Mexican food was traditionally plant-based, and this return to tradition has allowed chefs and restaurants to creatively showcase their heritage in new ways.
Despite the popularity of plant-based eating in Mexico, it is still not common to find vegan restaurants outside of Mexico City – but that’s quickly changing with many vegan restaurants popping up. Below are a few destinations at the forefront of vegan dining in other popular Mexican locales:
- Bonberi at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort (Los Cabos): This month, Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort, the most renowned luxury resort experience in Los Cabos, and Bonberi, cult favorite plant-based lifestyle market in NYC, have teamed up to debut a chic and colorful year-long vegan pop-up. The partnership offers an alternative approach to wellness, through boosting energy, building vitality and achieving overall well-being.
- La Rana Vegana (Los Cabos): La Rana Vegana is the first entirely vegan restaurant in Los Cabos. The restaurant offers a range of foods from tacos and quesadillas to pizza and cakes and encourages vegans and non-vegans alike to experience their unique offerings.
- Palmaïa – The House of Aïa (Riviera Maya): Palmaïa, a sustainable wellness resort, provides its guests with 100% plant-based menus across its four restaurants, with fresh non-vegan items available as optional add-ons. With seasonal menus, the four restaurants showcase a variety of cuisines from Mexican to Mediterranean and Caribbean.
The Lake Chapala area has many 100% vegan restaurants and many more full service restaurants offer vegan dishes. Most will cook oil free if requested.
