The New York City Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare sent an email to residents encouraging them to join together in meeting its meat reduction goals. The email, developed in partnership with World Animal Protection’s meat reduction campaign and linked to the organization’s Meating Halfway journey, suggested that residents incorporate individual practices such as Meatless Mondays, reducing beef by 50%, phasing out processed meats, and replacing meat dishes with healthier plant-based proteins.
Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Campaign Manager, World Animal Protection, US, said, “It’s incredible to see America’s largest City promoting a reduction in meat consumption. This guidance includes valuable information on the importance of eating less meat and resources to help New Yorker’s shift towards more humane and sustainable plant-based proteins. The United States consumes more meat than nearly any other country in the world. This demand for cheap meat has fueled factory farming and practices that treat animals as mere cogs in a machine, including extreme confinement, brutal mutilations, and antibiotics overuse. World Animal Protection’s vision is to create a world where respect for animals and nature sits at the heart of our food system, which is equitable, sustainable, resilient, and capable of feeding the world. By reducing demand for meat, dairy, and eggs, we can create a shift towards farming practices that are more sustainable and kinder to animals.”
