Victory has never tasted better. Eric Adams is New York City’s Mayor-Elect, the city’s first plant-based person to hold that office. To help further inspire and celebrate his taking office, Plantega, a turnkey solution empowering New York City’s corner stores/bodegas to sell plant-based food via a unique retail and foodservice model, has dedicated a celebratory, special edition, limited-time wrap in his honor. Starting today, the “Plant-Based Mayor’s Breakfast Wrap” is available at Marinello’s Gourmet Deli (located at 114 Wyckoff Ave Brooklyn, NY 11237) and Silver Moon Deli (located at 3840 Broadway New York, NY 10032). The wrap was carefully crafted to honor Adams’ committed dedication to restoring New Yorkers’ health through better food choices.
Adams had the first tasting of the Plant-Based Mayor’s Breakfast Wrap today at Marinello’s Gourmet Deli in his home borough of Brooklyn. The wrap is now available immediately following his official “thumbs up” approval through November 10, 2021, for $4.99.
“Throughout the campaign, I’ve spoken repeatedly about my health journey. After adopting a plant-based diet, I was able to reverse my type 2 diabetes, which changed not only the trajectory of my life, but also my career as a public servant. I am now committed to spreading that message and empowering New Yorkers in every zip code to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Mayor-Elect Eric Adams.
“COVID has thrown many of the inequities in our food system into sharp relief. We must address the disparities in access to healthy food which fall hardest on lower-income and Black and Brown communities. This change has to happen at a systemic level by transforming the environment in which New Yorkers consume food, from our schools and hospitals to our beloved neighborhood bodegas. Plantega’s innovative approach takes incredible steps to get us there — making plant-based food more accessible by empowering local businesses. I look forward to seeing Plantega’s vision of democratizing access to healthy, sustainable food in collaboration with bodegas, innovative food companies, urban farms, and public and private institutions come to life in the years ahead.”
The special-edition Plant-Based Mayor’s Breakfast Wrap is made with:
- JUST Egg
- New potato-based queso from LOCA Foods
- Spinach
- Red onion
- Tomato
- Avocado
- Wrapped in a toasted tortilla
The Plant-Based Mayor’s Breakfast Wrap is the latest collaboration produced by Plantega. After a successful three-store pilot that launched last November, Plantega expanded to 14 stores across the city this year, and growing locations monthly.
“Plantega is on a mission to make plant-based food more accessible and equitable, and we believe New York City’s iconic bodegas can play a pivotal role in leading this transformation. Just like our extensive subway system, bodegas are an essential part of the culture and fabric of the city,” said Nil Zacharias, CEO of Plantega and author of Eat for the Planet. “Having a champion for this mission at the mayor’s office is a tremendous opportunity to create a healthier, sustainable, more just food system for all.”
As Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams launched several ground-breaking food policy-related initiatives. At the urging of Adams, the City adopted Meatless Mondays in all New York City public schools. He was also instrumental in setting up the Bellevue Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program, a first-of-its-kind clinic at Bellevue Hospital that equips people with the tools to seize control of their health through a plant-based diet.
On the Mayoral campaign trail, Adams did more than just inspire New York City voters to cast their ballots for him this election; he also encouraged them to start taking control of their health. His book “Healthy at Last,” published last year, chronicles his journey reversing diabetes, losing weight, and improving his resiliency to chronic disease all through a transition to a tasty, whole foods plant-based diet. And now that journey has inspired a breakfast wrap in his name.
“Mayor-elect Adams is on a mission to make New York City healthier and an integral part of that is the food its citizens eat every day. Partnering with Plantega on a tasty plant-based JUST Egg breakfast wrap that bears his name is a great way to celebrate his victory and cast a vote for eating in a way that’s better for our bodies and the planet. We’re proud of the work that Plantega has done to increase adoption of delicious plant-based foods at the neighborhood level and can’t wait for customers to try their latest offering,” said Josh Tetrick, co-founder, and CEO of Eat Just, Inc., creator of JUST Egg.
“We are moved by Mayor-elect Adams’ personal story and his platform of revolutionizing access to preventative health care and nutritious food across New York City and beyond. Our focus at LOCA Foods is to create better-for-you versions of your favorite comfort foods, and we are proud of Plantega’s mission to enhance our communities by making plant-based foods accessible to all. It is an honor to partner with Plantega and Eat Just alongside Eric Adams in the creation of this delicious Plant-Based Mayor’s Breakfast Wrap,” said Lauren Joyner, Founder of LOCA Foods.
