After being open less than a year, Rebel Cheese Vegan Deli & Wine Shop has won Culture Map Austin’s, “Best New Restaurant” Tastemaker Award!
Husband and wife team, Kirsten Maitland and Fred Zwar partnered to bring their vegan artisan cheese creations to the burgeoning Austin restaurant scene last October. The plant- based gourmet cafe is the first of its kind south of the Mason-Dixon line, and the first vegan restaurant to win this award since the event’s inception in 2012.
Beer Plant, another vegan restaurant in Austin, was nominated in 2017, but did not proceed to the quarter finals. So Rebel is not only the only vegan establishment to have won, but they are one of only two vegan eateries among eight years and 128 nominees!
Additionally, according to ATX Vegans, there are about 40 places to get your plant- based fix, including food trucks, restaurants, sweet shops, and grocers. A quick google search will yield almost 400 total restaurants in Austin. A recent gallup poll identified 3% of the population as vegan, so for a vegan establishment to take this title is quite the feat!
In addition to plant-based cheeses that are made in-house at Rebel, you will find craft sandwiches, desserts, salad creations, and vegan grocery items.
Fred and Kirsten are excited to see vegan cuisine transforming Austin’s restaurant community!
They are open for curbside carryout and delivery, and can be found & followed at: https://www.rebelcheese.com
