Impossible Foods just announced that they’ll be introducing their Impossible burgers at Kroger stores starting last week.
“With America’s largest grocery chain, Kroger, carrying plant-based Impossible patties, customers in the United States—one of the countries that eats the most meat—have the opportunity to easily reduce their meat consumption and lower the overall demand for factory-farmed meat. By offering humane and sustainable proteins, World Animal Protection expects that factory farms can start being phased out, creating a shift towards farming practices that are better for the planet and kinder to animals. Meat reduction has the potential to put an end to many cruel industrial farming practices, such as extreme confinement, the overuse of antibiotics, and brutal mutilations” -Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Manager, World Animal Protection states.
Joe Loria also serves as the campaign manager for this first of its kind campaign for World Animal Protection. They have decided to launch the campaign in the United States as it is one of the countries that consumes the most meat. In order to end factory farming and improve the lives of farmed animals, Americans need to greatly reduce consumption of meat and shift to higher welfare practices.
“There has been a natural shift towards more Americans eating plant based, we can expect the overall population really improving their health. World Animal Protection has come across multiple studies that have concluded this. A recent study published by Stanford University, called the Swap Meat Study, found that by swapping animal based meat with plant based meat twice a day can improve several cardiovascular issues and the study even concluded that there were no adverse side effects or risk factors from the plant based products.
There are a lot of arguments that plant based meats are made in labs and are filled with harmful chemicals that could harm the body but there is actual research that prove the opposite. The reality is that the majority of real meat comes from factory farms where the animals are filled with antibiotics and are genetically manipulated to grow at unusual rates. So by eating more Impossible or Beyond Burgers or just more plant based foods in general, we’ll definitely see Americans improving their overall health long term as well as a great number will do it quickly.
It’s not just the health benefits that are improving, but also the animal’s lives. Modern day chickens weigh so much, 250% more than their 1950 counterparts, as well as hatching and immediately going to slaughter in 28 days; its insane. So when there’s talk that plant based foods are “unnatural or unhealthy” it’s important we put the chicken factor into perspective because its like eating a 500 pound 10 year old. So making the switch to plant-based meats help the animals greatly.”
World Animal Protection is an international animal welfare organization that has been around for more than 50 years and we have offices in 14 different countries. We work to protect wild animals, farmed animals, and animals impacted by natural disasters.Studies cited:
