Animal lovers and founders of the ethical vegan food company Upton’s Naturals, found out that their rescue dogs, which were found in two separate states, are actually related.
The Embark test results showed Frida, who was picked up as a stray in South Texas and transferred to Chicago for adoption by Nicole Sopko and Dan Staackmann, shares 6% of her DNA (meaning she’s a first or second cousin!) with their late dog Greta, who was adopted in Chicago 13 years prior. Greta was adopted in 2007 thanks to the help of CACC who found her and transferred her to Chicago’s Heartland Animal Shelter. A sweet pup with a polite demeanor, she instantly became part of the family and a well-regarded employee of the pair’s company.
After Greta’s passing, Staackmann and Sopko adopted Frida from One Tail at a Time, a Chicago-based rescue where she was transferred to from the Palm Valley Animal Society in Edinburg, TX. Finding out the two Shepherd mixes were biologically related was a phenomenal discovery that brought immense joy to these compassionate pet parents.
Upton’s Naturals will be launching a “Cousin Frida” donut at Liberation Donuts to celebrate their newest family member, and for the month of August, One Tail at a Time will be the beneficiary of the Total Liberation Donut to support their Pet Mutual Aid program.
August is @petmutualaidchi, a new program from @onetailatatime! All month long they will donate 50% of sales of their Total Liberation (lemon poppy) donut to support this awesome initiative!
One Tail at a Time believes that all pet owners should have access to the resources needed to keep their pets happy, healthy, and most importantly, in their home. Keeping pets with the people who love them is a hugely important way to help our local community, as well as reduce the number of animals surrendered to shelters.
One Tail at a Time Pet Mutual Aid (“PMA”) is a combination of community-centric programming aimed at sharing our resources with our neighbors across Chicagoland.
Add a TOTAL LIBERATION to your order to help support this program!
