31 days of Veganism for Brits could see significant impact says recent data with a CO2 reduction of nearly 5 billion kgs, equivalent to 846,530 homes’ yearly electricity supply – or 1,079 wind turbines’ yearly energy production.
Uswitch have found out what Brit’s are actually doing to reduce their carbon footprint in 2021. Through conducting a UK survey and having created a unique Veganuary off-setting calculator, people can now find out just how long they would need to go vegan for to offset their weekly footprint.
Meat eating VS plant eating stats:
- Meat eaters produce just shy of twice as much CO2 than vegans (2049kgs vs. 1052kgs per year).
- If meat eating Brit’s did Veganuary this year, they could collectively save 4.87 billion kgs of CO2. This is the equivalent to 541,100 hours of flying, or 6 months of a Belgian’s CO2 production.
- Meat eaters produce just over 117.4 million tonnes of CO2 per year from diet alone.
- Even switching from a meat eating diet to a vegetarian based diet for a year, could save the UK the equivalent of 4,373 homes energy consumption for a year (37,900 tonnes) – 57,100 tonnes if going full vegan.
- Almost half of the UK population (47%) are currently unaware that going vegan would reduce their carbon footprint by almost half.
- 94% of Brits (62.65 million people) claim they know how to offset their carbon footprint, with only 34% actually attempting to do so (21.30 million people).
- Siobhan Dolan from VIVA! comments: “Going vegan is the single biggest think you can do to cut down your environmental impact”.
- Of everyone who has tried a vegan diet, only 54% managed to do more than 14 days.
- Herefordshire has the highest amount of vegans in the UK compared to other regions (25%).
